I MAY NOT GET THERE WITH YOU ...
Jan. 12th, 2009 08:04 amAmong things I find powerful: Hearing the inspiring and convicting words of Martin Luther King Jr. as delivered with passion by young people of 16, 17, 18 -- people born in the early 1990s, to whom King's life and death were more than a generation away. People who, by the time they vote in their first election, will have known an America with a black president.
Among things I find unsettling: I was born a year after King's death, in 1969. That means I'm old enough to be every one of these people's father. Intellectually, I've known that for awhile -- my high school graduating class (1987) got its first grandparent last year. But it just kind of struck me this morning listening to these kids ...
... and not being all that worried about it. 'Cause the future looks like it's in good hands.
