In the words of the great Roger Miller: "You can't roller skate in a buffalo herd."

That was actually apropos of nothing. Just something that bears repeating from time to time.

Sigh. Bo Diddley -- whose influence can be heard (and felt) throughout the lifespan of rock and roll (and to some extent blues and even country) has died.

Of all the seminal 1950s rock/rockabilly/R&B musicians, he's the one who seemed to get the short end of the stick, recognition (and recompense) wise. (Carl Perkins is recognized nowhere near as well as he should be, though part of that's a function of being laid low by a car crash while Elvis' remake of his "Blue Suede Shoes" hit the stratosphere.) And Bo was pretty vocal about that, too. He once released a song, maybe a whole album, called "Pay Bo Diddley." And they should have. If you could copyright licks and progressions, he would have gotten royalties from about seven-tenths of what's on the radio. Practically any station

A fifth-generation photocopy of Bo hangs on my cubicle wall, a residue from some inside joke between [livejournal.com profile] hazmatplaytime, a couple other colleagues and me a couple years ago. I forget how it started, but (just like that Cheap Trick flame I mentioned a couple posts ago) every day I would come in to find multiple copies of Bo, around my cubicle. They proliferated: One day there was one, then two, then four, then eight, etc. I'm still not sure I've found all the Diddleys. He could have recorded that as well: "Find Bo Diddley."

Sigh. Another departure in a year that's seen too many and isn't half over.
