May? May?!? How did that happen? (Yeah, yeah, I know all about the cosmological and astronomical reasons thereof, shut up.)

Taking advantage of a day off to do a major load of spring cleaning. Over the winter, this place slowly morphed into one of your better landfills. I'm not home an awful lot, and when I am home I'm usually A. relaxing and unwinding after a 9-12-hour workday by reading, blogging, cooking, listening to music or watching tv; or B. leaping into productive work on the novel or other writing projects. It's not as bad as it could be: The living room is halfway decent; I have a clear path to the bathroom; I keep a reasonable percentage of the dishes washed; and there's usually at least one chair free of debris on which one can sit. But today's been designated B-Day, for Blitzkreig. Fortunately, there are some pleasant distractions to make it more than a Day O'Drudge -- like Pandora, which streams music based on its similarity in instrumentation, etc., to artists or songs you designate. (Earlier today, an Americana/alt-country set yielded selections from Son Volt, Calexico, Bettie Serveert, John Hiatt and Loretta Lynn, among others. Good stuff.)

The work weekend was a little more interesting than I like, due mostly with problems retrieving our stocks/mutual funds package from The Associated Press. Upon getting back in town Friday after the Fibs/Ookla sets in Buffalo (on which more in next post), I stopped in to the office to quickly download the package -- and found that the file was corrupted. I had several AP techs in Albany running around trying to figure out the issue that night and the following day -- all had worked swimmingly in every test run we had done over the past week (it's a new package we just started). Finally I concluded that something could be askew with my hard drive, a hypothesis that bore out when I was able to download the package with no problems using a colleague's computer. (He didn't have the necessary fonts, but once I had the stupid document into Quark, I was able to open it myself, as I do have the fonts.) Sigh. Crisis averted. I'll get our internal tech support on the job. It's probably something really stupid I should know about.

Yankees-Red Sox at Fenway tonight! This should be interesting. If only to see if Damon gets out of the ballpark in one piece ...
